Laying the Hawks hasn't been successful for me lately but in my stubbornness I find myself tempted yet again. In fact you could make a case for just about all of the outsiders winning in this first week of the split round. |

Hawks first night game since they got towled by the Bombers in Rnd 7. Their form at teh G under lights isnt impressive, 2 heavy losses. Essendon on the other hand have kept their good form for the G underlights going 3-2 with only losses to Collingwood and the Cats.

After winning the last 5 some have been fooled into thinking the Hawks are a genuinely good side, but looking into those matches we see a bit of inconsistency. Not that the Bombers are immune to that, but the odds here are pretty good for the outsider considering the levels they can potentially play to at Etihad - beating the Saints and Bulldogs. Last week was a bit of a catastrophe but they haven't been able to get near the Cats for a while and it was probably the difference in the odds being 2.50 instead of 2.10.

Seems a generous start for a team that has been competitive on the road. I'm expecting a close one. |

Fremantle looking wobbly of late, hope that can continue here. |

A history of close games between these sides. Port matched it with the Hawks in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago so no reason they can't pull something out of the hat this time against an arguably weaker side.

Terrible effort from Port, they look almost disinterested...
Getting to that time of the season where the weaker teams start to fade. The Dogs' running style is perfectly suited to Subiaco and they should have what it takes here.

Really would expect the Dogs to run all over the Eagles here. |

So we turn our attention to the second week of the split round. A 20.5 point head start in the GF rematch seems handy. Both teams deserve their places on the top two spots of the ladder. I would think the Saints usual stingy defense can keep this close.
Pies at the line also looks value. The Swans are traveling OK, but have really struggled against quality opposition. Pies have been a little hot and cold in the last month However this, now traditional, split round fixture at Homebush has been a happy hunting ground for them over the years. The Pies are probably a top 4 team and are a class above their Harbour side opponent. |

Might take a small stab at the Saints. In their current state they are perhaps a rung below the Cats, but I can't imagine them being uncompetitive. The way they've gone about things without their star is impressive.

I have no hesitation in backing the Pies considering their record in this fixture and their overall form.
