hey crawf - is there any way to reduce the amount of spammers that come on here? Since it's your site youre probably the only one with the admin power to delete posts and ban usernames etc.. but is there some kind of way we can discourage it? For example: for new users create a 24 hr cool off period whereby they cannot post or create new topics in the initial 24 hours that they sign up from with this restriction dissolving once the 24hr period is up?
Just a thought - not sure whether this is easily programmable or not.
cheers,
TF |

We had the same problem with an old forum. They are extremely hard to get rid of. The PHPBB forum software is not naturally setup to cope with spammers. There may be add-ons that can solve this problem but they would be tricky to implement and maintain.
The best way is to ban as money dodgey email addresses eg. *@*.ru should ban any email address with a ru (Russian) extension. Some other dodgey ones we had were emails that ended with .info and .biz. By banning these domains we knocked off the majority of these spam bots. |

Works good in theory - except when the spam keeps coming from different countries, like it is in this case.
Its checked and deleted every couple hours so can't really do much more than that. |

Perhaps you should use the feature where Admin has to authorize every new account?
Or if youy're so inclined, there's new PHPBB forum software- an eg of this is www.safooty.net |

Hi Guys,
I will start looking for some addons to maybe to prevent this, have looked in the past but it has really been something hard to stop.
It shouldnt really need to come to having to authorize every account.
If anyone is happy to put there hand up for a moderator job please email me and it will be taken into consideration.
Thanks for the input, anyone else with any advice its much appreciated. |

With the amount of SPAM we were getting we have changed all new user accounts to be approved by administration.
Any spam looking names that come through are automatically to be deleted, so pick your names wisely! |
